8 competitors, 5 days of movies, 0 hours sleep

If in coming days you walk through Times Square and see a faux living room with recliners and coffee tables surrounded by Plexiglas, pause to eyeball a spot where movie-watching history is about to be made.

In two weeks, eight contestants will gather there to try to break the 120-hour, 23-minute Guinness world record for continuous movie watching.

The stunt is hosted by Netflix, the online movie retailer, which has dubbed the event the first "Popcorn Bowl."

"It combines the love of movies with the thrill of competition at the Crossroads of the World," Netflix spokeswoman Leslie Kilgore said yesterday.

The eight movie buffs from around the globe include one who already holds the individual Guinness movie-watching record, Ashish Sharma of Mathura, India.

They will begin their five-day quest at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 2 in the 40-by-16-foot room being constructed in the midst of Times Square, with bathrooms just outside.

The rules require that contestants watch films nonstop, without averting their eyes from the screen. They can eat, drink, stand and stretch as long as their eyes stay glued on that screen. They get a 10-minute break after each movie.

The list of movies still is being compiled, organizers said.

A competitive eater, Jason "Crazy Legs" Conti, 37, of Manhattan, will take part in the challenge.
